The city was named after the headland of Dana Point which itself was named after the author Richard Henry Dana. In his book entitled Two Years Before the Mast, he described the area as “the only romantic spot in California”. The city covers an area of 76.2 square miles, of which only 23% is actually dry land, the rest is water and comprised of the bays and harbors that give this area its dramatic landscape. Year 2000 statistics tells us that there were just over 35,000 people living in Dana Point, making up some 14,500 separate households comprising of 9,280 individual families.

Dana Point Schools
The City of Dana Point falls within the Capistrano Unified School District. Local residents are lucky to have a huge selection of extremely good quality schooling within the immediate area. Many of the local schools have won national accolades for their excellence in education.

Dana Point Festivals Each year the local inhabitants of Dana Point look forward to the Dana Point Harbor Annual Boat Show, which sees just about every kind of vessel decked out and displaying its sails. There are also stalls and booths on hand from many major equipment manufacturers and many new and used boats for sale. Other great festivals to participate in include the Tallship and Great Schooner Parade in September, Annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, the Festival of Whales Street Faire each March, and the Dana Point Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving.
