The City of Newport Beach can be found within Orange County in the State of California.  It is approximately 10 miles south of the downtown area of historic Santa Ana, the county seat.   There are numerous prominent communities and neighborhoods in Newport Beach, including Corona Del Mar, Newport Coast, Balboa and Newport Heights.  The city covers a total area of over 40 square miles, 22 of which are water.  The area is renowned around the globe for its stunning beaches and the magnificent pleasure boat harbor.  Newport Beach is home to more than 9,000 boats and yachts and is regarded as the largest small boat harbor in the world!

A steamer named The Vaquero made its way into the lagoon area of Newport Beach to establish a trading route in 1870.  Local ranchers started to call the place where the steamer docked “Newport” and the name stuck.  Later in 1905, the city began to develop more rapidly due to the fact the Pacific Electric Railroad began to run a service connecting the city with Los Angeles.

Year 2000 census figures indicated that there were over 70,000 people living within Newport Beach, comprising of 33,000 households made up of almost 17,000 families.  The average population density was calculated to be around 975 people per square mile.

Forming part of the Newport Mesa Unified School District, residents have access to some extremely high quality educational options, including the renowned Newport Harbor High School, which has been noted for its excellence in education.

Newport Beach Parks & Recreation

Newport Beach is a recreational paradise.  It was recently voted the world’s “best all-around sports beach” by Details Magazine.  Leisure and recreation within the Newport Beach area tends to concentrate around the beaches and harbor.  There are also around 50 parks in Newport Beach, offering a huge range of facilities such as playgrounds, athletic fields, gaming courts and communal community centers.  You can hike, mountain bike or jog through the 752 acre Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve which is home to 200 rare and endangered bird species.  The Upper Bay is also home to the Newport Beach Aquatic Center, a national training facility for our Olympic athletes.

Sports enthusiasts are really spoiled; the sport fishing in the area is excellent with albacore, marlin, yellowtail, bonito, sea bass and halibut among the most popular game fish.  Golfers are served by five world class Newport Beach golf courses.  Surfing is a major sport here, one of the busiest surfing destinations in the world, along with scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, rowing, windsurfing, and a host of other water sports and boating activities.
