San Clemente Demographics As of the year 2005 census statistics, there were just over 65,000 people living within the city, making up some 25,000 housing units. San Clemente HistoryOriginally inhabited by Juaneno Indians, the area was first settled in 1776 by the Spanish. It remained fairly undeveloped until 1925, when the former mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, purchased 2,000 acres of land and designed a community to be built upon it. Hanson envisioned a Spanish style village in a seaside setting. He believed that the patrons of California were tired of the big city and would flock to his new community, treating it as a haven. The community was a success and the current state of San Clemente owes its roots to these historic times.San Clemente RecreationSan Clemente is one of the major surfing centers in the world. It catches significant swells all year round, making it a premier sport for the global surf community and especially residents within Orange County and San Diego County. The city is a natural center for surfing related industry and media organizations. The local San Clemente High School has won six out of the last seven NSSA national surfing titles. The remaining title was won by the local Capistrano Connections Academy.
There are a wide range of recreational facilities available locally, including the impressive Shorecliffs Golf Course. This is a spectacular PGA Championship golf course, and is open to the public 7 days a week. The tree lined fairways, canyon vistas and ocean views are combined into a par 71 course designed to challenge every golfer. Other sporting facilities in the area include the Swim and Tennis Club and such incredible hiking trails as Ridgeline.San Clemente Schools & EducationFalling within the Capistrano Unified Schools District, local residents of San Clemente are fortunate to have access to a myriad of high quality educational establishments, many of which have won acclaim at a national level for their educational standards.
